WHAT IS CHRONIC PAIN?

Chronic pain is a complicated and disabling condition afflicting millions of Americans each year, and may be related to trauma, injury, infection, or other – perhaps unclear — causes. It is generally defined as pain which persists longer than six months, and chronic pain can vary in characteristics, being mild, moderate, severe, intermittent or continuous, distressing to disabling.

People with chronic pain often report that that both their physical and emotional well-being are affected, and may feel a sense of helplessness or hopelessness. At United Pain Center, we understand the complexity of chronic pain, and the many ways in which life may be negatively impacted. Using the biopsychosocial model, which recognizes that multiple factors are involved in the development and persistence of the chronic pain state, they work closely with their patients to develop comprehensive strategies which target improved pain burden, physical function, and social satisfaction.

Comprehensive therapy may include medications, infusion therapy, minimally invasive interventional injections, Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator (TENS) units, neuromodulation, physical therapy, mental health care, and pharmacogenetic testing. In addition to discussing the suspected pain “generator”, time is also spent in understanding other factors which may be hindering improvement, such as isolation, insomnia, self-image issues and ineffective coping skills.
